The Abbey Scholarship offers an early career painter a full academic year (October to June) at the British School at Rome.

The Abbey Fellowships offer mid-career painters three months at the School during the same period.

All living expenses are covered and stipends are paid. The Abbey Scholar will receive £500 per month and the Abbey Fellows will receive £700 per month. The Abbey Scholar will also receive a travel award of £100 established in memory of Rosa Lee who was a member of the Abbey Council until her death in 2009.

An Abbey residency at the British School is an unique opportunity for painters to get away from the pressures of their everyday lives and work without interruption, with the added charm of living in and becoming familiar with the most fascinating city of the ancient and modern world.

There is Classical Rome, still part of the living city, the Catholic Rome of the Vatican and the many churches, Renaissance Rome, the Rome of Caravaggio and his contemporaries, and the Rome of the cinema.

But there are also the many attractions of modern Rome with its dynamic contemporary art scene, to which artists at the British School have ready access.

The Assistant Director, Fine Arts, is responsible for all the artists during their stay. He organises many visits to places of interest in Rome and excursions to other parts of Italy, some of them to sites normally closed to the public.

Artists are encouraged to talk about their work and are given the opportunity to put on studio shows, to which Italian critics and gallerists, among others, are invited.

There is a separate small gallery at the School, where exhibitions by resident and non-resident artists are held. Each year the British School publishes a Catalogue of artists’ work and an Annual Report which also features the work of resident artists.

When and where did you last have a really good night out (not working)….where and why? Embarrassingly the last big one I had was New Year! Vogue Fabrics in Dalston, dancing and picking up a wig instead of my coat.

What’s your favourite item of clothing and why? Not worn anymore so I don’t know if it counts but a pair of Docs I got out of bin when as a lot younger. They have flowers and barely any sole on them. But they hurt too much now so they are sitting on my fireplace.

When did you last shed a tear? Not saying this to look hard but I find it near impossible to cry. I get upset, shout and all the rest a lot but not tears. So it was a long time ago, I think when a friend and I feel out.

If you could own any piece of art in the world, what would it be? ‘Morning’ by Agnes Martin.

Who makes you go weak with desire? Prince! I saw him at the O2 and screamed like a little girl for 2 hours.

When was the last time you embarrassed yourself to the point that you blush inwardly when you think about it? I was out and saw in the corner of my eye a bar stool behind me. Tried to sit down and it turned out to be woman doing up her shoe.

When was the last time you told a lie? 4 questions ago.

Who is your favourite fictional character? Window; my toy parrot when I was a kid.

If you had to represent your life so far in a shoebox, what would you put in it? My camera; obvious reasons – My necklace; first thing given to me by my first love – A large line drawing I did at school; first time I realised art had no boundaries

What album will you keep listening to and never get bored of? Postal Service- Give up

You got a hot date/guest you wanna impress- what do you cook them? Sushi! On a massive colourful plate!

What song will you have played at your funeral? Destiny Child- Survivor (see if anyone at the funeral is rude enough to point out the irony)

Should marijuana be legalised? Why not?

What’s the most embarrassing thing on your iPod Amanda Lear- Fashion Pack

If you could be trapped in a lift with any 3 living people – who would they be? Anthony McCall, Prince, although I don’t know if he would be very engaging to be stuck in a lift with, Richard Wilson

What makes you happy? Drawing on tracing paper

Panel of Judges
Hannah Barry, Director of Hannah Barry Gallery/ Rukhsana Jahangir, Head of Art Department, Museum of Everything / Samuel Gassmann, Independent Curator

Walking through a metropolis as diverse and rich as the city of London, one’s eye is rarely focussed on a single object alone. Whether by choice or not, we are perpetually assimilating a never-ending stream of communication and visual stimuli. Such is the ceaseless challenge for modern urbanites, to take in and make the most of the infinite knowledge and opportunities that this city has to offer.

We are all constantly examining – a gaze that wanders from ourselves and our family, to wider concerns with society and the constructs that shape and mould us. Looking inwards, outwards and all around, the shortlisted visual artists for the 2010-2011 CIR programme explore a diverse range of both personal and objective concerns. Working across very different media, their practice engage with questions that we do not always take the time to face. Whether answers are found or not is immaterial – it is the process and journey of seeking that produces such rich and mind-lingering effects.

Rukhsana Jahangir, Curator

Alex Shepherd – Creative in Residence 2010
Alex Shepherd graduated from Camberwell College of Arts in 2009 with a BA Hon’s in Photography. Working in a wide variety of mediums including film, sculptural installation and photography, his work explores our sometimes troubled relationship with geometric form. Alex’s work often takes a very formal composition, inviting the viewer to study and rethink their conceptions and approach to form.

Since graduating he has continued his practice and been active in the East London art scene; showing regularly in London and internationally.
